Abstract

A crucial yet mysterious process in the fine-scale temporal genetic variability of marine new settlers has been highlighted in a study by Bode et al. (2019). Direct genetic methods have contributed to our understanding of larval dispersal by revealing new evidence of various patterns of local retention, self-recruitment, or asymmetrical gene flow in marine organisms like reef fishes, California red rock lobsters, and demersal fish (Saenz-Agudelo et al. 2012, Iacchei 2013, Ottmann 2016). However, it is recognised that the variability of oceanographic currents and biological parameters, such as the length of larval dispersal, the quantity and kind of spawning, and larval behaviours, impact larval transport and recruitment. Consequently, the evaluation of benthic population dynamics is much more difficult.
