Abstract

Raising awareness about the ecological importance of one of the most productive ecosystems on this planet requires a call to emphasize the urgent need to strengthen conservation policies. Such efforts include environmental education programs. The national scientific literature on mangroves and environmental education highlights the educational challenges of marine biodiversity conservation. This chapter discusses experiences related to an educational program based on mangroves and associated systems which culminated in a national project: The Marvelous Mangroves Curriculum Guide. We emphasize that as important as creating new protected areas, mangrove educational programs are an indispensable part of the environmental management process itself. This experience suggests that the Ministry of the Environment should continue to strengthen the management of Brazilian coastal and marine protected areas, by also encouraging environmental education as a process to engage young citizens and their communities towards conservation.
