Abstract

In the face of ongoing environmental changes, there is an urgent need for the development of sustainable agriculture and aquaculture techniques that will improve the livelihoods of rural communities and safeguard the food security of coastal states now and in the future. The on-site implementation of these techniques, however, often encounters barriers. In this workshop, participants (local community, researchers, government officials) jointly discussed their views on the barriers and possible leverage points for successful implementation of innovations for marine-through aquaculture and agrarian food production. This workshop was held in two parts: a morning session consisting of a group discussion and an afternoon session consisting of a Net-Map activity (after Schiffer and Hauck 2010). The goal of this workshop was to connect stakeholders from different parts of the society, enabling for an exchange of views and ideas, for strategic planning to solve imminent problems and to initiate further cooperation.
