Abstract

The growth of southern anchovy Engraulis anchoita was investigated in this work as part of the multidisciplinary project, carried out aboard the RV Meteor as part of SARP programme (Sardine-Anchovy Recruitment Programme of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission IOC). Otolith readings were calibrated by comparing light microscope readings with scanning electron microscope readings. Different growth models were applied to describe the growth of larvae between 8 and 35 mm TL (total length): a linear function, a power function, a modified power. function with estimation of L-0, and the Laird-Gompertz function. The parameters of the Laird-Gompertz model were estimated as: L-0 = 2.72 mm, L-infinity = 60.5 mm, G = 0.041, a = 3.1, t(0) = 27.5 d. Daily growth rates, retrieved from the different models, vary between 0.65 and 0.99 mm for the size range investigated. Growth at different stations was compared by the slope of linear regressions and the exponents of the power functions. Offshore stations were generally found to show higher growth rates than inshore stations. At least three spawning cohorts were separated geographically: One offshore, one nearshore and a possible one in the southern parr of the investigation area.
